FIRST FEATURE WIN FOR RIGGS
Posted June 5, 2011
Haubstadt, IN - June 4, 2011. Casey Riggs turned in a flawless performance to capture the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series feature Saturday night at Tri-State Speedway. It was not only his first victory in MSCS competition but his first ever in a sprint car. The effort was worth $3,000! Riggs also took the first of two qualifying heat races which paid $200 to win! The heat race bonus money was another added incentive from the Michael Cunningham family.
The 22 year old driver has been racing sprint cars for about 3 years and is from Shelbyville, IN. The Maxim he drives is owned by Terry Riggs with Mike Dutcher serving as the crew chief and it is sponsored by Indiana Underground Construction. Riggs also earned the most passing points during the heat races.
Once all the victory photos were taken, Casey Riggs hesitated in finding the words to describe the special occasion. “I have an awesome team. Everybody works so hard. Charlie Fisher builds the best motor!” Riggs looked up into the stands and thanked the fans in attendance for their support. “It’s you guys that let us put on a show and give us the opportunity to run as hard as we do!” Then on behalf of all the drivers he added: “Thanks to the Cunningham family for providing all the extra money in the purse.” The contribution totaled over $3500.
Seth Parker started on the pole for the 25 lap feature race and would pace the field for 15 laps. Kyle Cummins was the first driver to give chase and then Riggs, who started fourth, moved up into contention for the lead. Parker escaped from a near spin in turn two only to have the car dance sideways in turn four dropping him to fourth at the finish. Riggs had taken command and proved that he was fast enough to hold off Brady Short and Critter Malone over the final 12 circuits. Short’s sprint was beginning to overheat at the finish. Malone who had a good run explained how he encountered problems in traffic. “I almost stopped in trying to miss a driver spinning and that took away any chance we had to get a win!”
Kevin Thomas Jr. was fifth in the feature. He also won the other qualifying heat race and the accompanying $200 bonus prize! Kyle Cummins held sixth at the finish in the feature with Braylon Fitzpatrick, Joe Liguori, Mark Perry III, and Dakota Jackson rounding out the top ten.
Brian Karraker finished eleventh and received the Wilwood Tuff Brakes Award. Drivers Joe Liguori and Brian Karraker were both making their very first appearances with the series. Braylon Fitzpatrick was the Keizer Aluminum Wheels Hard Charger of the Race in advancing 5 positions in the feature. He started deep in the lineup after making contact with the wall in the fourth turn during a very competitive first heat.
MCDOWELL PICKS UP THE UMP MODIFIED WIN AT TRI-STATE
Haubstadt, IN. - June 4, 2011. Brandon McDowell won the UMP Open Wheel Modified feature to close out the night’s racing program. McDowell started on the pole and used that to an advantage in taking the $600 top prize. Tyler Weiss of Mt. Carmel, IL, finished second in the 25 lap event after starting sixth on the field. Justin Story, Bradley Sterrett, and Kyle Decker rounded out the top 5 at the finish.
Stan Beadles and McDowell won the two preliminary heat races. The UMP Modifieds will be back in action at the Haubstadt oval on Father’s Day June 19th.
